Lesson Plans

A great deal of time and planning goes in to daily PE lesson plans and units. These plans align with the State and National PE Standards and Objectives. Below are samples of lesson plans used at North Ward.

3rd Grade Fitness Day Lesson Plan

State/National Goals:
20.B.2a Monitor individual heart rate before, during, and after physical activity, with and without the use of technology.
20.A.2b Regularly participate in physical activity for the purpose of sustaining or improving individual levels of health-related and skill-related fitness.

Objectives:
Psychomotor: Students will be able to perform various types of movement through exercise for a sustained amount of time.
Cognitive: Students will understand the basic components of fitness being performed and also the correlation of elevated heart rate, sweaty bodies, and heavy breathing in relation to exercise performance and fitness levels.
Social: Students will be able to work with others in a way that fosters encouragement and fellowship.

Lesson:

  • Students will come in and sit on their assigned spots.

  • Teacher will explain the “fitness circuit” that the students will be doing for the day. The teacher will also explain that there are specific goals to be met which include each students should have an elevated heart rate, sweaty skin, and they should be breathing hard. The students will also be informed that if they do well during the circuit they will be rewarded with music during the exercises and a parachute day on Friday.

  • Circuit stations - Stretching, jumping jacks, running in place, “army crawl”, dot sprints, sideways line jumps, sit ups, and balance bubbles.

  • Students will be grouped into groups of 3-4 and will perform each exercise for 30 - 45 seconds. After the time is up a whistle will blow and the students will rotate clockwise to the next station. Students will pause for a short break and start the exercise when the teacher gives the signal.

  • Once the students are done they will be probed to see if their heart rate is elevated, if their skin is hot and sweaty, and if they are breathing hard.

  • If the students met their goal they will be informed before they leave class.

  • Students are lined up at the door ready for the next class.

Speedball with a Pin lesson Plan

State Standards/ Goals for learning:

  • 20.B.2b Match recognized assessments of healthrelated fitness (e.g., FitnessGram) to corresponding components of fitness.

  • 19.C.2b Identify offensive, defensive, and cooperative strategies in selected activities and games.

  • 21.B.2a Work cooperatively with a partner or small group to reach a shared goal during physical activity

Lesson Goals:

  • Affective: Students will learn how to work well with fellow students to complete a shared goal.

  • Cognitive: Students will understand the importance of moving to open space and keeping appropriate spacing when on defense and offense.

  • Psychomotor: Students will perform basic throwing, catching, and movement skills.

Lesson Objective/Purpose:

  • Students will be able to identify each exercise and stretch performed with the appropriate fitness component and stretch type.

  • Students will be able to work as a team to complete a shared goal of trying to win a game together.

  • Students will attempt to keep game appropriate “spacing” when on defense and offense.

  • Students will attempt to get everyone on their team involved by passing them the ball when they are open and encouraging each other to do their best.

Introduction/ Lesson:
Students will come in to class, girls will stand on the east sideline arm length away from each other and the boys will stand on the west sideline arm length away from one another.
Students will be greeted and asked to do 2 dynamic warm-ups, 1 static stretch, and two exercises.  After each activity they will be asked to identify the type of exercise, stretch, or warm-up each are by teacher survey. (Example… students give a thumbs up if they think the jumping jack is a ___________ exercise, etc….)

Once the warm-up is complete the students will be given a quick review on what we are playing and then they will be separated into their teams and courts for game play. (We will be at the very end of this unit so the students should know all or most of the basic rules to the game.)

Students will be reminded that they need to keep good spacing throughout the game and that when they are on defense they are not allowed to guard the ball.

Mr. Dees will start the south court with a jump ball and Mr. Vincent will start the North court with a jump ball. From here Mr. Dees and Mr. Vincent will officiate each court but will act more as a facilitator and will have the players make the majority of the calls. If there is a argument the students will be reminded that “rock, paper, scissors” is used to resolve conflict.

Basic Rules of Speedball:

  • Game starts with a jump ball

  • Once possession is obtained, players are allowed 3 quick steps, and from there must pass to a team member or shoot at the goal. (the only other option is the pivot)

  • If the ball touches the floor at any time after the jump ball/ tip possession will change. (examples below)

  1. If an offensive player drops the ball, it goes to the defender.

  2. If a defender slaps the ball down, the ball goes to the defense.

  3. If a goal shot has been attempted and missed the ball goes to the defensive team that didn’t attempt the goal.

  • The defense cannot guard the ball or hit the ball out of the offensive player’s hands.

  • The defense can however intercept the ball to gain possession.

  • Possession goes to the defense if the offensive player takes more than three steps or if the official starts a countdown and gets to 0 before the player throws the ball.

  • Goals are awarded when a bowling in the goal is knocked down by a thrown ball or if the goalie accidently knocks it over while protecting the goal.

  • 1 point is rewarded each time the pin is knocked over

  • No player other than the goalie can be inside of the goal at any time during game play.

  • Team with the most points at the end of class wins.

Lesson Closing:
With about 1 minute left the students will be asked to have a seat, the teacher will let them know how they did (positives/things to work on). Next week’s unit will be introduced and the students will be sent over to the south baseline to line up for their teacher.

Instructional Strategies:

  • Direct Instruction

  • Large/Small Group Work

Materials:
4 pins
14 cones
2 balls
Entire gym floor
Vests for all 4 teams

Evaluation:

  • I will know that the students have learned the fitness components when they are post tested on their fitness component knowledge in 2 weeks.

  • I will know if the students know understand their warm – ups origins by surveying the class after each warm – up activity.

  • I will know if the students have met the team goals when I observe the students working together, keeping their spacing, and encouraging one another.

PLAN B:
Sometimes the classes are sent down late and I have straggling students. If this happens we may skip some of the warm – up activity and move right into the speedball game.
